The ladies at SuperShe love the sun. We love the way it wraps around us as we lay on the beach or paddle out into the line-up leaving us with a radiant afterglow. However, from one surfer girl to another, we know that hours surfing and kiting can be rough on our bodies from the inside out.

As athletes, we experience muscle fatigue, overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV radiation, and sometimes overdo it. Can you blame us? Whether we’re kiting Turks and Caicos or surfing Waikiki or galavanting around New York, we love the adrenaline rush of the waves or windy city. Here are four simple tips directly from our beautiful surfer girls to make sure that we don’t get too caught up in the fun we forget to take care of ourselves.

If you’re a water baby it makes it difficult to know at times when you’re dehydrated. Take care and hydrate before and after your surf or water sessions. This not only prevents the body from cramping and injury but keeps your skin hydrated, therefore more resilient, from the inside out.

The body needs movement, but it also needs stretching to allow blood which carries oxygen and nutrients to areas that need it. It’s essential to take 10-15 minutes of stretching all areas of the body before and after your sessions or workout. Breathe, breathe, breathe.

There’s a million and one products out there that say they protect you from the sun’s powerful and damaging UV rays. Pick sunscreen products that are made out of natural ingredients and water resistant. Don’t just think about applying protection while you’re in the water but before, after, and even for your days out of the water make sure you’re protecting your eyes with a pair of sunglasses. Just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean that UV rays are coming through.

Even if it is a 30 minute power nap, this is a tough one for SuperShe’s. As gorgeous as your drive, resilience, and discipline is, rest and relaxation of the mind, body, and spirit is key to your survival and progress. From the waves to the office to the baby’s room, everyone, including you, needs you rest your mind and body.
